Why did you choose to study at Writtle University College?
I chose to study at Writtle because of its reputation - Peter Seabrook and Geoff Hamilton had been students. It was the beginning of the road. It took me years to realise what my focus should be, but, along the way, I was able to draw on knowledge and understanding which I picked up from College - and it's that wide range of experiences that have contributed to success in my career.

My Career Path
I started my career working for a Beatle. I was employed on Ringo Starr's estate near Ascot when he was still recording Thomas the Tank Engine. He lived at Tittenhurst Park, which was previously owned by John Lennon and where John and Yoko filmed the video for Imagine. Ringo had a wholesale plant nursery on the estate and my first full-time horticultural job was as assistant to the manager.

I worked for 29 years in local government; my last post was as Head of Historic Environment at Winchester City Council where I managed the Conservation Officers and Archaeologists, and represented the City Council on all heritage matters. It was a very busy job in one of the most historic cities in Britain; the late Anglo Saxon Capital of England.

I now run my own business, Axford Heritage Planning, as a Heritage Consultant advising home owners, businesses and other bodies about the architectural and historic significance of their properties and assisting them through the planning process when they want to make alterations or repairs.
