Writtle’s Mark Walker helps Alex Dowsett to smash one-hour record!
Essex boy Alex Dowsett has beaten the one-hour cycling record in the Manchester Velodrome - with the help of Writtle College's Mark Walker!
The Movistar Team rider made history by covering 52.937km, which was even more impressive due to Alex having to make a quick recovery from a broken collarbone in February.
Mark, Course Leader for the Foundation Degree in Cycling Performance, was integral to this success and carefully constructed a training schedule to ensure Alex was at peak fitness for the attempt.

Students preparing to showcase their work at the Writtle School of Design Degree Show
Artworks, garden designs, landscape architecture proposals, and interior schemes are now taking shape as students at Writtle College prepare for their Degree Show.
The three studios at the College will be converted into exhibition space for the Show, which will be launched on Wednesday 20 May and be on until Saturday 23 May - you are very welcome to come!
Pryle Behrman, who heads up WSD and also curates part of the London Art Fair, said: “The WSD Show is a fantastic finale to students’ education here."

Have you seen our new Agriculture campaign?
Writtle College has teamed up with a number of industry bodies to launch a new campaign which aims to raise awareness of careers within agriculture.
The campaign aims to tackle stereotypes of the sector, as well as explaining the impact agriculture has on the world around us.
Organisations such as Lantra, Bright Crop, Essex Young Farmers and Essex Agricultural Society, have all given their backing to the campaign as the College aims to improve the appeal of agriculture to a younger audience.

Postgraduate wins prestigious garden design student award
A Writtle College postgraduate has won a major student award for her garden design which aims to support those facing mental health issues.
Jiyoung Kim, from South Korea, who graduated with an MA in Garden Design last year, overcame strong competition to be joint winner of the Society of Garden Designers' Student Award.

A team from Writtle College has qualified for the 2015 Cereals Challenge and is now trying to grow the best plot of winter rye.
The third year agriculture degree students are going head-to-head with those from five other universities and colleges in the annual competition.

How do you clicker train a pig?
Are vultures more intelligent than we give them credit? Can essential oils entice tigers out of their indoor enclosures? Can you entertain a hyena with a fruit kebab?
These are just some of the questions Animal Management and Animal Science degree students were addressing in their dissertations this year. They gave a poster presentation of their research at the College.

Photography competition success
A Writtle College postgraduate has won first place in a photography competition run by the Forest Stewardship Council.
Marion Sidebottom, who is an MA by Dissertation in Art and Design student at Writtle School of Design, took a stunning black and white image of an ancient hornbeam tree in Hatfield Forest.
The photograph won the Terrific Trees category.

See the foal at Writtle College's Stud Open Day!
The latest foal to be born at Writtle College will be the star attraction of the Lordships Stud Open Day.
The fun-filled day, from 11am to 3pm on Sunday 10 May, will feature demonstrations and activities as well as the chance to meet the mares, foals, stallions and youngstock at the Stud.
One foal has already been born. A filly foal, named Ila, was born on 24 April at 5.55am to her dam, Ali G. Ali G is not owned by the College; she is a livery at the Stud unit.

Visit to the Olympic Park with the man who has overseen its creation
Postgraduate and undergraduate students from the Landscape courses at Writtle College were shown around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park by Dr Phil Askew, Project Sponsor Parklands and Public Realm.
Alumnus Dr Askew has overseen this amazing new park for London from the initial design phase through construction and the Olympic Games, and now into the most important phase - a meaningful legacy.
He explained a whole range of landscape issues that were particularly useful to students, including the value of research, clear processes, sustainability and communication.

Writtle College student wins national scholarship and grant to carry out dissertation in Kenya!
Horticulture charity the David Colegrave Foundation (DCF) has awarded Alastair Arnold, who is studying for an MSc Horticulture Crop Production, a £1,500 sponsored scholarship from the South West Growers Show.
The GCRI Trust - which promotes scientific research and education on the cultivation of glasshouse and protected crops, mushrooms and bulbs - has also given Alastair a grant of £750 towards travel for his dissertation project to determine how effective different semiochemicals are in attracting thrips, which he is carrying out with the Real IPM Company, based in Thika, Kenya.

International Federation of Landscape Architects - Europe accredits courses
Writtle College courses have been accredited by the International Federation of Landscape Architects - Europe.
The Federation has accredited the College's BSc (Hons) Landscape Architecture and BSc (Hons) Landscape and Garden Design. The recognition also extends to postgraduate courses: the MA in Landscape Architecture and Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture - which are also accredited by the Landscape Institute - and the College's postgraduate conversion courses in Landscape Architecture.

Society of Biology recognises Writtle College BSc (Hons) Animal degrees
The Society of Biology has officially recognised two of Writtle College's three-year Animal courses under its new Degree Recognition Scheme.
The BSc (Hons) Animal Management and the BSc (Hons) Animal Science have been given the recognition for the next five years as they deliver high quality biology-related content.

Best in Show, gold and now People’s Choice for Writtle College!
Writtle College’s team won all three of the top prizes in the Young Gardeners of the Year competition at the Ideal Home Show 2015!
The team – made up of FE and HE Horticulture students – scooped Best in Show, gold and the People’s Choice award, prompting TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh to say he was very proud to be Writtle College patron.

Conservation scheme takes delivery of unmanned aerial vehicle
The Conservation scheme has just taken delivery of its own custom-made unmanned aerial vehicle or ‘drone’.
Students from the Conservation (and other) schemes will be invited to learn how to operate the drone and its camera.
Drones are now used to monitor the presence and behaviour of animals as well as being used to survey remote and inaccessible areas, for both conservation and agricultural purposes.

Trial for Tozer Seeds conducted at Writtle College
Writtle College students are working on a crop trial for a major breeder and supplier of chilli peppers and tomatoes in the UK.
The current crop trials work being conducted in the research glasshouse features over 40 cultivars of chilli peppers all provided by Tozer Seeds.
The Tozer trials at Writtle College also contain a range of speciality tomatoes and sweet peppers, which are from Tozer’s own breeding programme as well as from their marketing partners.

Reader in Postharvest Technology Dr Chris Bishop has attended the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture, Abu Dhabi, as an invited scientist.
He also met with a former student, Raghavender Karnay, who is now Quality Assurance Manager for the Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services.

Writtle College hosts BUCS equine competition
Four teams visited Writtle College's equine centre to compete in a British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) dressage and jumping competition.
Teams of four from Writtle College, University of Essex, University of Cambridge and University of East Anglia went head-to-head.
The Writtle College A Team - comprising Beth Barrett, Bex Slade, Hannah Dury and Emma Walker - came second to Cambridge University. Bex came fifth individually and Emma was the individual winner.

The third Steering Group Meeting of the SAMUz project (Sustainable Agricultural Management for Uzbekistan) was held at Writtle.
The College, along with German, Spanish and Greek partners, is helping to redesign the agriculture curriculum in HE institutions in Uzbekistan.

Design postgraduates at Writtle College displayed their fascinating concepts for a prominent site in Chelmsford.
MA in Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students displayed their Urban Territory Studio projects in the High Chelmer shopping mall.
The students' work was for their design studio project - entitled 'A new vision for Chelmsford City Rivers: Design Proposals for a Resilient Urban Landscape' - which was run in consultation with Chelmsford City Council.

Lordships Stud welcomes two young rescue horses from World Horse Welfare
Writtle College has welcomed two young horses from World Horse Welfare - the UK's largest horse rescue and re-homing charity.
The two-year-old horses, Revel and Alaska, joined Lordships Stud in January and will stay for the duration of their formative years, before being returned to the charity for re-homing.

Writtle College Senior Floristry Lecturer Julia Ryde has attended the House of Commons launch of the new Institute of Professional Florists.
Julia, a British Florist Association (BFA) judge, went to the prestigious event at the House of Commons.

Barn owl caught on film at Writtle College
Writtle College Conservation staff have used a trail camera to capture footage of a barn owl.
The camera - the type used on various wildlife programmes - caught the barn owl in one of the College's buildings.

Students visit fruit packaging centre
MSc students visited Chingfords packing and distribution centre in Kent which supplies Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, amongst others, with fruit.
The focus of the visit was on the issues surrounding the supply chain of citrus fruit from different parts of the world to the UK.

Study tour to Lisbon
Landscape Architecture and Garden Design Masters students have visited Lisbon for their 2015 study tour, exploring the city and its hinterland including hillside, coastline, river and urban contexts.

10th UFAW Student Animal Welfare Conference
Two Writtle College students picked up awards at the 10th annual Universities Federation of Animal Welfare (UFAW)conference.
The conference involved students from Moulton College, Hartpury College and Brooksby Melton College, who presented their research findings.
Writtle College BSc (Hons) Equine Science (Behaviour and Welfare) students Aline Bouquet and Charlotte Maru finished first and second, respectively, for their research oral presentations at the conference.

International floristry
Julia Ryde, Course Manager for the Higher Education Floristry courses, recently visited Korea and spent time at Kaywon School of Design, where she met floristry students.
In March, the HE and FE students went on a study tour to Holland where they visited a specialist Orchid grower, Flora Holland Flower market and took part in a workshop with a Dutch floral designer.

The next Open Day at Writtle College will be held on Wednesday 3 June.
Our Open Days are aimed at people who are looking to study at either degree (undergraduate) or Masters (postgraduate) levels.
The Day runs from 11am to 3pm and gives prospective students and guests the perfect opportunity to find out more about what's on offer at Writtle College.
Throughout the day you will have the opportunity to learn all about the College, meet course tutors, tour the campus with current students, discover student life here, and learn about the support available to students.
