Role

Course Scheme Manager for FdSc Cycling Performance
Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology, Nutrition and Applied Coaching Science

Biography

I obtained a BSc(Hons) in biotechnology from the University of Reading before gaining a PGCE in science teaching at the University of Leicester. Following a brief period as a school teacher I studied for an MSc in sports science at the University of Essex and moved into HE lecturing. I joined Writtle College in 2006 as course manager for Sports and Exercise Performance and was Deputy Head of the School of Sport, Equine & Animal Sciences from 2009-2015.

In 2014 I set up the FdSc in Cycling Performance which I now course manage. My current teaching areas are applied exercise physiology, applied coaching science, sports nutrition and work-based learning in cycling. My research interests are in pacing strategy in off-road cycling and the modelling of cycling power data. I have published topical articles on cycle coaching, a book chapter on cyclocross, and have reviewed for the cycling section of the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine.

I currently split my time between Writtle and my work as an elite cycling coach. I have coached numerous amateur and professional cyclists. My most notable achievements are guiding Alex Dowsett to the World Hour record, 10 mile championship record and a Commonwealth Games Gold medal. I have worked with Helen Wyman for five years and assisted her towards to two European Cyclocross Championship titles, numerous national titles and a bronze medal in the 2014 Cyclocross World Championships.

My coaching experience extends across a number of cycling disciplines including track, road, time trial, cross-country MTB, cyclocross and triathlon. I have provided physiological testing to cyclists of all abilities and across all disciplines. I also work as a consultant to other coaches and have provided sports science support to a sports marketing company and a large multinational corporation.

This year (2017) I developed a business partnership with the On Form cycling team and this led to the development of the Writtle University College Cycling Academy
