Sustainable Development and the Landscape - (15 Credits)
This module examines the need to develop areas coherently and in a sustainable manner, and to protect sensitive landscapes from inappropriate development. This will include the study of the objectives of planned development, influencing factors and drivers, policies and the legislative framework in which sustainable development sits. Students will be introduced to current strategies and approaches in sustainable landscape design including green infrastructure and sustainable drainage. They will consider how design can be responsive to the environment, site ecology and bio-diversity. The module will introduce the students to ideas such as site regeneration, healthy communities, carbon sequestering, air and water cleanliness, energy efficiency, sustainable resource management and the economic, social and environmental benefits of landscape.
