Principles of Strength and Conditioning - (30 credits)

This module will examine the application of scientific training principles for enhancing athletic development. It will illustrate how a detailed understanding of physiological principles and training theory can be applied to the effective design of training programmes for a range of athletic abilities. It will also evaluate the scientific evidence to support the use of a variety of systems and methods of training to enhance athletic ability and decrease injury risk. The module will allow for students to recognise the importance of fitness and performance testing as a key tool in the design of an individual's training prescription. Practically, students will have the opportunity to investigate, measure and analyse the components of fitness, and practice using exercises to enhance sports performance. The module will also consider health and safety and informed consent.
