This is the first 30 credits of a 60 credit work-based learning strand within the FdSc Sport and Exercise Science with Outdoor Activity course. This module is designed to facilitate the learning of 5 core skills for outdoor activity leadership and coaching as well as delivering some theoretical and philosophical aspects of outdoor education. The module will be delivered throughout the year – initially on two days per month from October to February (apart from one sailing weekend in October) – but then via a 4 week training placement in March/April. It will be split between Essex Outdoors sites where specific activity skills will be learned (sailing, paddleboarding, climbing, archery, paddle sport) followed by more general safe group handling and effective leadership skills will be taught. Successful candidates will be interviewed for seasonal instructor posts at the various Essex Outdoors centres. Academic content will include basic commentary on the educational and philosophical theory behind outdoor education as well as specific academic content such as how to write an effective PDP and reflective commentary. These elements will be taught and delivered at WUC during the other two days per month in October to February.
