This module is designed to develop the understanding of the relationship between structure and function in the human species by exploring the anatomical diversity and physiological control of the major body systems from a cellular level upwards. The module will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of human physiology for the coach and/or health professional covering such topics as: the structure and function of the skeletal and muscular systems; the processes underlying energy production and metabolism; neurological control and neuromuscular adaptations; and the endocrine system. It will also develop a broad knowledge of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and their acute response to exercise. Taught across both semesters of the first year, the module will provide a core understanding of the science needed for linked modules as well as providing the practical competences for independent data collection in subsequent study within the course.
