International Value Chain A - (30 credits)

The module provides an introductory awareness of working in value chains that are market driven. It will explore examples of successful value chains as exemplars and as indicators of future thinking. Delivery will explore consumer needs and reasons driving change, to assess how perceived value might be created for them. It may require some exploration of cultural similarities and differences between consumers and their behaviours; this will be accompanied by product characteristics and the rationale behind these (in partner countries and /or consumer segments). The focus will be on identifying characteristics of the product offer, exploring environmentally sustainable production systems to deliver a product that aligns with the consumer. The module offers choice of two delivery patterns with guidance on enrolment provided on an individual basis. Version A is taught across Semester A and B (Semesters 3 and 4) and is based at Writtle University College, version B is delivered in Semester B (semester 4) with multi-site delivery. The intensity and delivery pattern for the International Value Chains timetabled for semester B only (version B), facilitates a period of optional study in at least one European country and / or lecture / tutorial support through reciprocal links with external specialist staff and other students. It gives students the opportunity to work collaboratively with peers, based in these other countries, on a business-based project. Co-delivery and knowledge exchange with other institutes will allow students to gain a deeper insight into the international dimension of value chain. This co-delivery offers considerable opportunities for deeper professional and personal growth. For those electing to study wholly in the UK, Version A has a delivery pattern spread over two semesters: it will use these same external links, but this is confined to and synchronised with set weeks in version B’s delivery. This allows students to also gain project management skills in a business context; it does not offer study at other institutes. For both patterns of study, the experience will be collated in the Personal Development Portfolio for Academic Professional Development, which is designed to stimulate a critical understanding of their own career development and professional planning.
