Writtle College was this week visited by a rare bird.

A female Black Redstart, a species much more commonly associated with large cities such as London and Birmingham, appeared on the College estate, prompting much interest among Conservation staff and students.

Black Redstarts were originally a species of mountainous areas but have colonised urban areas across Europe after learning how to nest on buildings.

Conservation Lecturer Alan Roscoe said: “It was nice to have our own mini birding twitch!”
