A floristry workshop for students aged 10-15 years of age was held on Thursday 12 April at Writtle College during the Easter holidays. Nine students from the Essex area were taught how to design and create their own floral Easter arrangement and moss Easter bunnies.

The yellow themed table arrangements featured gerberas, chrysanthemums and spray carnations. While the 3D Easter bunnies and teddy bears were made from spagnum moss and wire.

Jan Metcalfe, a floristry lecturer from Writtle College commented: “the workshop has been a real eye-opener for the students, a lot of the time people just don’t realise what floristry is all about. The idea for the workshop came to the team after I conducted some practical demonstrations at a local school in Essex - the children were fascinated and intrigued by what I was doing. The holiday workshop was all about giving the students a taste of floristry and trying something that was new to them.”

The first workshop was arranged and booked by word of mouth only, and proved to be very popular with the young students and Jan went on to say: “Following the success of our first holiday workshop, the floristry team would like to host some more sessions starting with a date in the summer holiday.”

Kaitlin Head, nine years old from Chelmsford said: “I will give my flowers to my Nan and Grandad and will put my Easter bunny on the windowsill. I would like to come to Writtle College again and do another floristry session.”

Rosie Denman who is 12 years old and goes to Brentwood commented: “It has been a really fun day – it’s really clever how we made the floral arrangement and the moss 3D statute bunny. Next time I would like to make some more flowers with a different theme.”
