A group of Level 2 and Level 3 Sports Turf students recently visited Wembley Stadium to tour and examine the famous Wembley sports turf first hand.
In particular the students had requested to see the Ground staff quarters, as well as the specialist machinery and pitch equipment during their tour.
The tour took the group through the Football Association (FA) reception area, and here the students were fortunate enough to meet an official from the FA. The students were also introduced to the Wembley Grounds Manager and from him they heard about how the turf technology is used on the playing surface at Wembley, and were also offered information on the management and maintenance of the pitch.
To finish the day the student’s had a tour of the England Home Dressing Room at the stadium.
Nigel Beckford, Sports Turf Course Lecturer said “all of the students really enjoyed the unique experience of being able to examine the playing surface and the machinery used at Wembley. Being so close to the priceless collection of trophies on display at the stadium was a bonus for the College tour group.”
In January this year one of Writtle College’s students in 2006-2010, Nick Phillips, received the prestigious Young Groundsman of the Year Award for his work at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
