Nick Phillips, Writtle College student 2006 - 2010, has recently received the ‘Young Groundsman of the Year Award’ from the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG).
Nick, who is currently working at the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club grounds where his work and expertise is greatly valued, commenced studies at Writtle College with his NVQ Level 2 in Sports Turf Maintenance. After the successful completion of this course he progressed on further to the NVQ Level 3 Sports Turf Management at Writtle.
Nigel Beckford, Course Leader for Sports Turf at Writtle College said “Nick always applied himself to his studies with unrelenting diligence and determination to complete assignments and work to the very best of his ability.”
Continuing on about the Sports Turf portfolio taught at Writtle College, Nigel said “a major highlight of the Level 3 course is the construction module which enables students to use construction machinery and construct sports surface features, for example golf green, tees and bunkers.
Other highlights of studying at Level 3 are the great job opportunities upon completion, while another positive aspect and truly motivating feature is the opportunity to go to the United States and work on the Ohio State University International Programme where students can work on some of the top golf courses in the states.”
