On March 10th, Dr Kami Baghalian (senior lecture in Crop Production) hosted three highly esteemed scientists from EAST Malling Research Institute (NIAB EMR) at Writtle University College.
- Prof Dan Sargent, Head of Genetics, Genomics and Breeding
- Dr Mark Else, Head of Crop Science and Production Systems
- Adam Whitehouse, Senior Fruit Breeder, Genetics and Genomics and Breeding
The visitors enjoyed a tour of the campus' facilities and had the opportunity to explore the vertical growing units. They were then introduced to the team of our industry collaborator (iGrowing) who are experts in vertical farming technology.
The two teams, together with Dr. Kami Baghalian and Dr. Anya Perera (Head of school of Sustainability and Design) had a very productive discussion on possible collaborative projects going forward.
Professor Dan Sargent, Dr Mark Else and Adam Whitehouse then delivered a guest lecture about their work at East Malling to the University College's BSc and MSc cohorts. Students had the opportunity to learn about NIAB EMR's projects and their mission to conduct high-quality strategic and applied research in horticultural and environmental sciences, and to benefit public and private customers.
Dr Kami Baghalian said: "We were delighted to welcome the NIAB EMR team to Writtle University College and would like to thank them for their inspirational guest lecture. Our strong networks within the Horticulture sector are of huge benefit to our students and help to keep them informed of the latest research and innovations."
