Writtle University College (WUC) student Judit Aulinas Coll has been named the winner of the 2019 BETA Equine Thesis of the Year Award. Her dissertation, The Effects of Dynamic Mobilisation Exercises on the Biomechanics of Ridden Horses, was presented to a panel and chosen from a group of four finalists on Sunday 27 October. Judges included research consultant Dr Georgina Crossman, chair of the BETA Feed Committee Chris Gordon, ETN editor Liz Benwell and vet Karen Coumbe.

Judit undertook the dissertation as part of her BSc (Hons) in Equine Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation. She said: "I did not expect to present my research at the BETA Equine Thesis of the Year when I began my trial, let alone receive an award. It was definitely a heartfelt moment. The standard of the other research was very high, and the competition was tough."

WUC Senior Lecturer Dr. Roberta Ferro de Godoy said: "Judit has shown hard work and dedication. I am delighted to see the research we do at Writtle winning such a prestigious award and being named the best equine dissertation in the country."

Judit's work investigated the impact of a core strengthening programme in promoting improved gait symmetry and equine wellbeing. Her finished dissertation received attention internationally, having been presented in Italy at the World Equestrian Veterinary Conference (WEVA). She also received an award for best poster presentation at the ALLECH Hartpury conference.

Judit added: "I would advise future students to find a project that really motivates them and also to surround themselves with supportive people. I could have not performed this project without my supervisor, Roberta Ferro de Godoy, and the collaboration of La Bruguera and the owners that trusted me with their horses."

Judit plans to continue studying at Writtle University College, to complete an MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy.
