Writtle University College student George Jones has taken first place in the Team On Form Writtle University College Road Race. 60 cyclists from multiple clubs travelled the 58 mile route on September 15th.
Race organiser and Writtle lecturer Mark Walker said: “As always, Writtle is delighted to be working closely with Team On Form and its Team Principal Simon Howes. We’d like to thank all those involved and the many outstanding cyclists who competed in this autumn’s race. We were proud to see the success of one of our own Cycling Performance students. It was a fast and closely fought competition with the winner, Writtle’s George Jones, averaging 27 miles per hour to take a well-deserved victory.”
George cycled on behalf of Bikestrong-KTM. Lee Valley Youth CC’s Harrison Mayo took second place and Craig Nicholls from API-Metrow/Bodyby JR finished third.
George said: “come the day of the race I was feeling good and motivated to try and get a result in the university's home race.
“The race itself set out fast and I quickly found myself in a breakaway with two other riders. Despite working well together, we were brought back by the bunch, after which I tried to conserve energy for the inevitable bunch sprint. With such finishes not typically suiting my abilities, I wasn't expecting to be at the front of the sprint. When I eventually crossed the line in first place I was very surprised but incredibly happy.
“After a long season, starting all the way back in February, it was special to win my final road race of the year, made even more so by being able to represent the university in its own race.”
