Further Education students at Writtle University College (WUC) in Essex are celebrating. Learners have marked their academic achievements with a special event.

Presentation Day took place on June 21st at All Saints Church in Writtle. Students were awarded certificates in Agriculture, Animal Management, Art & Design, Equine, Floristry, Horticulture and Sport.

Certificates were presented by Writtle University College’s Chancellor, Baroness Jenkin of Kennington. Governor Nick Spenceley delivered an inspirational speech urging the students to apply the skills learnt during their studies to a range of situations.

WUC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Middleton praised all students for their hard work and their outstanding achievements. He named a few of their many successes, highlighting the recognition their work gains in the professional sectors WUC courses prepare them to enter:

• Floristry student Amanda Shand put her skills to good use earlier this year, when she delivered a fantastic result in the WorldSkills UK competition.

• Horticulture students did an excellent job supporting a world class exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden designed by Tom Hoblyn, where they put their plant knowledge into action. They are also contributing to the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Festival.

• Bryony Smith won gold at the Federation of English Karate Organisations in the 16-17yrs Wado Ryu-style Kata, making her English Champion in that category.

• Students raised over £2000 with a celebrity football match in aid of GOSH, arranging sponsored kit and a venue along with a whole team of celebrities including TOWIE stars, ex-footballers and actors.

Professor Middleton said: “Today we’re celebrating how far you’ve progressed during your time with us and the friendships and professional networks you have made. Whether you joined us from school or a previous career, you will face your next challenge with valuable new skills and knowledge.”

Writtle University College is rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted.
