Writtle University College (WUC) is celebrating a successful open day at its state-of-the-art Lordships Stud.

Over 200 visitors toured the cutting-edge facilities, as part of a fundraising event arranged by first year Equine Performance and Business Management students in support of World Horse Welfare.

Proceeds will be used by the charity to further its work around the globe; improving the lives of horses through education, campaigning, and hands-on care.

A group of eight students took the lead in planning, delivering and promoting the open day, with the aim of raising awareness and money for a good cause.

Their family-friendly event featured horseshoe painting and activity sheets for children. Guests of all ages enjoyed a busy schedule, including fun, fact-packed talks, a youngstock parade and a special appearance from Tony, the football-playing pony.

For a small fee, guests could also show off their own riding skills on a mechanical horse.

The hugely popular day was part of the students’ Event Management module. They aimed to emphasise the long-running links between WUC and World Horse Welfare.

WUC staff previously visited the National University of Lesotho in Africa with World Horse Welfare, to offer advice on equine welfare. The University College also helps with the rehabilitation and training of the charity’s rescue horses in preparation for re-homing.

Lecturer Jaime Finch said: “I am incredibly proud of the hard work the students put into making this event a success. They have increased awareness of the hard work carried out at Lordships Stud and also raised money for a good cause.

“Without such dedicated students, the equine department at WUC would be unable to host such successful events.”
