Further Education floristry students and staff have been busy preparing their entry for the RHS Floristry College of the Year competition at Chelsea Flower Show.
The team, which includes 19 floristry students, will be competing at the prestigious event against the top two college medal winners from last year’s Hampton Court Flower Show competition and the top two medal winners from Tatton Park.
Students and staff have been brainstorming ideas and working hard to create a display that is truly breath-taking. The brief received was to bring the carnival atmosphere to Chelsea by creating a float for a Brazilian carnival. One of the key requirements for the theme is that it must be bright and colourful, using fresh materials.
Writtle’s float has a vibrant Brazilian carnival lady with a decorative wire floral bikini, tropical rainforest tailing skirt, with headdress and carnival wings as she’s walking though the rainforest, surrounded with tropical foliage and flowering plants. The display also includes a brightly coloured tree frog, yellow Hibiscus flower and a hovering blue and green Humming bird.
Helen Sheard, Level 3 Diploma in Floristry Course Manager, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to be involved in designing and creating a display for Chelsea Flower Show. Their quality of work has been of such a high standard. They’ve all worked incredibly hard to produce such a fantastic float and we are all really proud of it. We can’t wait to share it with everybody.”
Chelsea Flower Show begins on Tuesday 24th May and the Writtle Floristry team will be busy setting up their entry from Sunday 22nd May.
