Writtle College now also has two emus, which hatched on a Channel 4 documentary!
Alice hatched live on the Easter Eggs Live in April 2013 while Kevin hatched out during the night.
They have come to Writtle College from Jimmy’s Farm in Suffolk and have now been re-named Sid and Diego after their initial sexing was discovered to be awry.
Stevie Sheppard said: “They are more than 5ft tall and they look a bit like dinosaurs, which is why the students named them after the Ice Age characters. Emus originate from Australia and are the second largest bird in the world.
“As with all new animals, they’ve been in quarantine at the Titchmarsh Centre for Animal Studies but are now out in the paddock and are settling into life well here. They will be used to teach our FE students about handling and caring for this exotic species, which is invaluable experience when they go into the industry.”
