A Writtle College student’s work has been chosen for a prestigious internationally touring exhibition.
Sam Sheppard, who graduated this year with an FdA Digital Art and Design and is now studying for a BA Art and Design Practice, is showing artwork as part of The Lumen Prize Exhibition of digitally-created artworks.
The exhibition began its four-stage tour in London at Gallery 27, Cork Street, from 22 to 26 January before proceeding to Latvia, China and Hong Kong.
24-year-old Sam’s contribution is a software programme that he has written, which builds a portrait in 10 minutes.
Pryle Behrman, Course Manager of the Art and Design Programme at Writtle College in Essex, said: "It is testament to the originality and creativity of Sam's practice that his artwork has been selected for an award as prestigious as The Lumen Prize Exhibition. Within Writtle College’s art and design degree programmes, we strive to enable our students to reimagine and reinvigorate the best practices of contemporary culture for the increasingly digital world around us, something that I feel Sam has admirably achieved with his innovative, and very beautiful, computer-generated portraiture."
Carla Rapoport, CEO of the Lumen Prize, said: “The Lumen Prize Exhibition is an international award for the very best fine art created digitally. Its goal is to focus the world’s attention on this exciting genre of fine art through an annual juried competition and global tour of the winning works at selected galleries and venues across the world. It seeks the most compelling work of well-known artists working with smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and computers as well as work from artists who are just starting out with these tools.
“The 50 works that make up the Lumen Prize Exhibition were chosen by a panel of art experts, gallery owners and academics from around the world. The exhibited artists come from 44 cities and 13 countries, including Iran, Pakistan, Sweden, and China. Their digitally-created works include time-based, interactive and 2-D works.”
