Writtle College hosted a mare grading event in conjunction with Sport Horse Breeding Great Britain (SHB GB) on 22 September.
The event was held at Writtle College’s Equine Training and Development Centre at the Cow Watering Campus. Eleven broodmares were inspected by judges from the Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain.
Five mares from the College’s Lordships Stud were presented and inspected, including two college-bred mares who gained Head Studbook scores. The broodmares, Lordships Dimension (Dimaggio x Atlantus) and Lordships Lollipop (Broadstone Landmark x Obadiah), were prepared and handled by staff and students.
Amy Mills, Lecturer in Equine Science and a breeding and reproduction specialist, commented: “The event was a huge success with our two college bred mares graded into the studbook. Lollipop is a proven success for the stud with her first foal (by Grafenstolz) achieving a Higher First Premium at the British Equestrian Federation Young Horse Futurity Evaluations in the summer, and Dimension’s first foal (by Don Diamond) is in the top ten yearlings evaluated for eventing this year.”
Other college mares were accepted into the Main Studbook including Nether Another (Another Sam x Netherkelly), Mizz Southgate (Orpen x Deputy Minister) and Cornish Queen (Rock King x Ben Faerie) who is in foal to Parco for the next season.
Senior Lecturer in Equine Science and Business Management at Writtle College, Pennie Wallace, saw her homebred mare Pencos Highland Springs (Broadstone Landmark x Gamblers Cup) approved into the Head Studbook. Her other broodmares Steely Girl (Accondy x Strong Gale) and May be a Gamble (by Mayhill out of Pippa Funnells ride Merry Gambler) were both accepted into the Foundation Studbook, although May be a Gamble with a Main Studbook score.
