Staff and students at Writtle College in Essex hosted an evening showcase to display some of the region’s youngest and finest horses.
New and returning students, as well as members of the general public, attended the free spectacle, including recent graduate Mel Thornton.
Thirty-year-old Mel, from Grays, returned to the College’s Equine Training and Development Centre with five-year-old ‘Greg’, a horse she had bought from the College’s stud after her second year course module ‘Youngstock Production’. Mel completed her BSc in Equine Studies with Breeding and Reproduction in 2012.
Amy Mills, Lecturer in Equine Science and a breeding and reproduction specialist, commented: “What is most thrilling are the opportunities that the event created for our students both past and present. The showcase encouraged former students with college-bred horses to have their first outing and receive their first ever round of applause.”
Amy added: “Current students prepared, plaited and handled the College’s horses and many new students spectated. Every student who helped out at the stud impressed the staff with their attitude and willingness and their continued ability to improve their own skills.”
The event was held at Writtle College’s Equine Training and Development Centre at the Cow Watering Campus on 22nd September. Most of the horses presented were bred at the College’s Lordships Stud.
