The Governors of Writtle College have announced that the search is underway for an exceptional new leader to take the College forward, following the current Principal Professor Dave Butcher's planned retirement at the end of 2012.
An inspirational and visionary leader with an understanding of arts and science in the environment is being sought to take over from Professor Butcher. The new Principal will also need to manage the dual strands and demands of Higher and Further Education and have a passion for the College's specialist portfolio. An understanding of the need to enhance the student experience and a willingness to work closely with the industries that the College serves will be essential.
Retiring Principal, Professor Butcher joined the College in 2006 from Nottingham Trent University where he was Dean of the School of Animal, Equine and Environmental Studies. He has also held a number of other leadership roles in higher education including at the University of Central Lancashire and has represented higher education as a UCAS Board member.
Commenting on his time at Writtle, Professor Butcher said: "When I joined the College, the main aims were to improve the quality of teaching, develop research and build a robust financial footing for the future. I have enjoyed working with some highly talented colleagues during my time here and collectively achieving these goals."
During his retirement Professor Butcher plans to return to the Peak District and will continue with his research in upland hydrology.
Chair of Governors, Lotte Olsen said: "Dave has made a fantastic contribution at Writtle. Under his leadership, the research profile of the College has grown significantly. Subject areas such as design, animal and equine science and conservation have flourished. He has also had the vision and tenacity to make changes that have helped lead to long-term financial stability and continued independence."
