Careers, Employability and Enterprise teams at Writtle University College (WUC) are celebrating success. They achieved the Matrix Standard, the international quality standard for organisations that deliver information, advice or guidance.
A recent accreditation review delivered outstanding feedback. The report praised the "student first" culture and commented on staff's "passion to help students understand their progression opportunities and provide them with the resources to achieve their end goal."
The assessor noted WUC's effective use of technology to deliver and improve services. Special attention was also given to the Student Success Advisory Board's work to identify students' needs.
The assessed areas are part of WUC's Student Success team. The team ensures each student can achieve the best outcome possible in line with their desired aspirations.
The highly trained staff strive to improve the learner journey by enhancing employability opportunities, providing mentors to support at risk learners and support students to understand and develop learning and career pathways.
Their targets include providing 100% of higher and further education students with access to one-to-one impartial careers advice and guidance.
The careers advice service works to receive a minimum overall rating of 4+ out of 5 in the impact polls that take place following sessions.
Student feedback during the accreditation process reflected the current 4.76 rating. Comments included: "The one to ones I had with Careers really helped me to get ready for University and they were so helpful with my UCAS and Personal Statements".
WUC's careers adviser Mark Yates said: "Achieving Matrix has been a great achievement for WUC. Going through the reaccreditation process has been really positive to help us reflect on what we are doing well and how we can continue to improve. Our aim is to support every student to start their career well, based on their experience at WUC."
Roundtable careers events also proved highly popular, with students appreciating opportunities to learn directly from industry experts.
The Head of Student Success, Donna Franklin, said: "Delighted to announce that the Careers, Employability and Enterprise service (part of the wider Student Success team), have been awarded the Matrix Standard on 8th December 2022.
"Assessor Andrew Davey highlighted many strengths including 'the service was seen to reach out effectively to all students and by harnessing an effective teamwork approach with other areas of the University College, ensured a good synergy that not only connects with all students but is also able to continually support their needs'.
"The passionate team work tirelessly with all staff at Writtle University College (WUC) to support student outcomes and this accreditation demonstrates the culture 'employability is everyone's business' at WUC!"
