Student athletes at Writtle University College have plenty to celebrate. The Essex-based educational has been accredited by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).

TASS is a Sport England funded partnership between talented athletes, education institutions and national governing bodies of sport. It works to bring the best out of the country's most exciting young talents.

The Sport England-backed programme helps young sportspeople to gain qualifications while still carrying out their athletic pursuits. The scheme allows athletes – aged 16-plus – to get the very best from their sporting and academic careers without having to choose between the two.

Lecturer Laura Johnston says: "We are delighted to receive TASS accreditation. Writtle University College is dedicated to helping young athletes pursue their sporting development while gaining an outstanding education. Students can enjoy excellent support as they pursue a dual career."

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson backed the scheme, saying: "I believe we have a duty to help young people to achieve their potential, whilst prioritising their welfare, wellbeing and education. For the vast majority of athletes, skills and formal qualifications are needed to help them find alternative careers, either alongside their sporting activities or once their sporting days are over."

"For me the TASS Dual Career Accreditation Scheme is a vitally important measure to ensuring all athletes have the chance to pursue an education and enjoy a more well-rounded approach to life."

The University College has grown from its land-based roots to offer sport science, floristry, equine and animal-related subjects, in addition to agriculture and horticulture.

The campus features outstanding facilities, including a new Centre for Sport and Health, the first 3x3 basketball courts in the UK, a gym, extensive playing fields, equestrian facilities, bike trails, sports fields, indoor courts and a reservoir used for kayaking and bodyboarding, with more exciting developments to be unveiled in the coming year.

The University College's team includes highly trained professionals within the fields of coaching and sports science, who are delighted to be TASS accredited. Staff are dedicated to upholding the scheme's ideals and are proud to provide athletes with flexible learning opportunities.

Writtle University College looks forward to offering the stars of the future continued access to academic and sporting support.
