Artist Molly Hawkins is blurring the line between art and sport with murals that transform basketball courts into colourful, vibrant spaces.

On July 3rd 2021, her work took centre stage at the opening of the UK's first dedicated 3x3 courts.

This fast-growing form of basketball is a new addition to the upcoming Olympics and the 2022 Commonwealth Games but players can still struggle to find dedicated practice space.

Writtle University College in Essex is the first UK educational instruction to truly invest in 3x3 with bespoke facilities. Molly Hawkins was commissioned to create an energetic, colourful design for the University College's show court.

Writtle University College's Head of Sport, Dr Greg Deacon, said: "3x3 is basketball at its simplest and most inclusive. Molly's stunning design has made our showcourt an inspirational setting for elite and new players. It's the first of many fantastic projects that help us to support students, athletes and the local community."

Molly added: "My design concept focuses on how shapes and colour can create dynamic motion. The colours I chose for this piece create a clash in energy that, to me, feels really exciting and powerful. The vibrant themes of the court will, I hope, ignite passion and creativity."

Molly trained in Theatre & Performance Design at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. As part of her degree, she studied Scenic Painting, which led to an interest in designing murals.

She said: "For the last seven years I have been painting my art works across all surfaces, weird and wonderful, crumbling and new, large and small! I've painted over 75 pieces of work, and in the last year I have been thrilled to be a part of creating art for two basketball courts. This is a very new concept to have swept across the UK, boosted by the newly available range of colourful paints for sports surfaces."
