Elliot Wollen has been named 'Student of the Year' in the 2020 Student Spotlight Awards.

Head of Student Success, Donna, said: "Congratulations to all of our shortlisted candidates. This year's entries were of an incredibly high standard. We were delighted to shine a light on outstanding achievements in the fields of community, extracurricular and enterprise excellence. Our winner, Elliot, is transforming lives within his community."

In 2013, Elliot launched 'Herts & Essex Community Farm', a not-for-profit project that produces organic food for volunteers, homeless support organisations and local residents.

The farm, which covers around half an acre in Fold Croft, Harlow, has attracted over 200 volunteers, who learn gardening and farming techniques.

Elliot is also a founder of the 'Harlow Soup' initiative. This regular get-together crowdfunds local community, creative, entrepreneurial projects that benefit Harlow Town.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, Harlow Soup moved online. Virtual events have provided funds for organisations impacted by the pandemic, including a local foodbank, in addition to supplying PPE for frontline workers.

Elliot said: "As a dyslexic who never thought I would go to university, to be awarded Student of the Year is incredible!"
