Writtle University College (WUC) students have taken the first steps towards their dream jobs at one of the world's most prestigious Thoroughbred Studs.

Shadwell Stud provides generous scholarships, covering tuition fees and accommodation, for four students studying WUC's Certificate of Higher Education in Thoroughbred Stud Operations. The course, which launched in September 2019, supports students as they take their first steps into the thoroughbred breeding sector. It was designed in conjunction with some of the biggest and most respected names in UK thoroughbred production. Representatives from a range of studs have been working closely with Writtle University College staff to provide work experience placements for the foaling season.

Scholarship recipients have benefited from a work placement with Shadwell's enthusiastic, knowledgeable team. After gaining their qualification, they will return to Shadwell for a further year. This exciting opportunity will offer an outstanding grounding in the production of top class racehorses, including six months in their breaking, pre-training and rehabilitation centre.

Caroline Flanagan, WUC's Head of School for Equine and Veterinary Physiotherapy, said: "Shadwell Stud's scholarships have offered a fantastic opportunity for our students. We have enjoyed following the progress of these students as they work with some of the highest quality racehorses in the UK. Shadwell are committed to providing this exceptional scholarship to these very lucky students; recipients of these awards will be receiving the chance to enter what can be a very rewarding career."

Scholarship recipient Eleanor Watson has been enjoying her work placement. She said: "Every day I learnt something new! The staff were extremely helpful and experienced. They always answered questions and were great at giving us new experiences to learn from."

The Thoroughbred Stud sector contributes around £189m each year to the UK's economy. The one-year higher education course at Writtle University College uses a combination of academic study and valuable hands-on experience to create skilled employees for this exciting, well-established sector.
