Congratulations to our graduate Michael Ekers who has won a Landscape Institute East of England award and is a Finalist in the SGD (Society of Garden Designers) Student Awards.
Out of the nine projects shortlisted for the national SGD Student Awards, two are Michael’s. His thesis about Sadd’s Wharf in Maldon – entitled Burrowing in the Dark – and his design proposals for the Tithe Barn on our campus are shortlisted in the Commercial category for the Best Student Design.
The winners of the Student Awards will be revealed alongside the winners of the main SGD Award categories at a ceremony on Friday 1 February 2019.
Michael, who graduated this year with a BSc Landscape Architecture with First Class Honours and is now studying at Writtle for an MA Landscape Architecture, has also won the Landscape Institute’s East of England Branch’s undergraduate award for Best Planting Design or Thesis. The honour was for his dissertation which explored how aleatory systems (spontaneity and intuition) could be used to inform the design of a post-industrial site at Sadd’s Wharf, Maldon - which judges described as “remarkable”.
Mitsuteru Futoi, MA Garden Design, also won a Landscape Institute East of England award. He was given the Best Landscape Planting Design or Thesis (Postgraduate) accolade for his proposal for a healing garden for those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder at Maudsley Hospital in South London.
