The WUC Design Degree Show 2018 has opened, giving an inspiring showcase of work by our Art & Design, Landscape Architecture & Garden Design, and Professional Floristry students.
The Show kicked off with a buzzing Private View on Wednesday (16 May) evening for the families and friends of the exhibiting undergraduates and postgraduates as well as potential employers and industry professionals.
The event, set within our design studios, is the culmination of students’ research, professional skills development and creative enquiry over the length of their course.
Landscape and garden theory, urban and ecological design and artistic practice underpin the works from Landscape Architecture & Garden Design students. The projects look at a range of locations, from post-industrial Maldon to Bukit Kiara National Park in Kuala Lumpur, the Suffolk Punch Trust at Hollesley in Suffolk to Korean Garden Culture.
Among the exhibiting Landscape Architecture & Garden Design undergraduates exhibiting are students who produced work for the ‘Rethinking Repton’ exhibition at the RHS Lindley Library in London, which runs until 22 June. The works respond to 18th Century garden designer Humphry Repton’s unique method of presenting to clients with ‘before’ and ‘after’ visualisations.
Professional Floristry students demonstrated their craftsmanship and floral art with students drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including Alice in Wonderland, Pop Art, Hansel & Gretel, the natural world and Henri Matisse.
Art & Design students explored novel themes and approaches using a range of media. Projects included an installation using discarded packaging materials to tackle issues of social inequality and exclusion, a deconstructed acrylic image of a Gothic cathedral responding to the geometrical ideas that underlie the architecture, and video work exploring dance and costume.
To coincide with the exhibition, the first year Art & Design students have created a range of land art that has been installed across the main campus.
The exhibition is open every day from 11am to 5pm until Sunday 20 May.
