Paul Downer, Governor and alumnus of Writtle University College, has been appointed Chairman of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) – the leading Trade Association for the nation's landscape professionals.

Having graduated from Writtle University College with a HND in Amenity Horticulture in 1989, Paul has successfully set up his own landscaping business Oak View Landscapes Limited in Colchester whilst being a member of the Royal Horticultural Society and a Board Director of BALI since 2006.

Paul welcomed his appointment as Chairman, he said: “I am very proud to be chosen to lead the board of directors at BALI as we continue to promote excellence, sustainability and quality in our sector. Delivering successful landscaping schemes is essential to maintain a balance between infrastructure developments and natural environments – all of which are of key importance for amenity purposes and wellbeing.”

“BALI supports and inspires us, professional landscapers, garden designers, and our supply chain to be leaders of an environmentally, ethically and commercially sustainable landscape industry. I look forward to continuing working with our board of directors and our members to continue delivering to the highest standards in our sector and to inspire current and future students and apprentices to be the best in what is a very exciting profession.”

BALI's Marketing and Communications Manager, Darren Taylor, commented: “We are delighted with the appointment of Paul as BALI's National Chairman. Paul's landscaping business Oak View Landscapes Limited has continually supported BALI and the company itself has gone on to become one of the leading, premier businesses in the UK for landscape installation for commercial and private clients, winning numerous awards including several coveted BALI National Landscape Awards. As a BALI Board Director since 2006, he has supported the Association's activities, specifically focusing on educational links including BALI's Student Membership. He possesses a wealth of experience both in the industry and as a long term serving BALI Board Director.

“It is testament to this fact that Paul now joins a long and proud tradition of taking the helm of a strong and experienced BALI Board and we wish him the very best in his new position. We look forward to working closely with Paul over the next few years as we drive BALI forwards into a new era."

Dr Stephen Waite, Vice-Chancellor of Writtle University College, added: “Our graduates, like Paul, go on to achieve great things in their fields. Our alumni not only work in a sector, but they become leaders too. Paul’s appointment is recognition of his contribution to the landscaping industry and his relentless commitment to excellence in everything he does, as well as his wider ambition to inspire more people to choose a career in the sector to make it resilient and future-proof.

“I would like to thank him for his contribution to the University College over the years and congratulate him on what is a very well-deserved appointment.”

Paul has been a Governor of Writtle University College since 2008 and is currently a Member of the Further Education Committee, Representative of the Governing Body on the Health, Welfare and Safety Committee and Link Governor for: Horticulture & Horticultural Technologies and Health & Safety. He also enjoys football, cycling, gardening, climbing and walking.
