Writtle College is delighted to announce the launch of a new Integrated Masters (MSci) programme in Bioveterinary Science from September 2017 – subject to validation. The programme will be a milestone for Writtle as it will be the first course to be validated as part of being awarded Taught Degree Awarding Powers.

Bioveterinary Science is the study of animal health science, including research into the diagnosis, prevention and management of health issues in animals. The new MSci in Bioveterinary Science has been created working closely with the industry, and will be a full-time, four-year Integrated Masters degree that will equip students with the latest skills for a range of careers in the veterinary sphere of employment. It is composed of a three-year undergraduate course and a one-year Masters course all rolled into one.

As part of the course, students will have access to the latest Bioveterinary Science equipment – including a ‘CatalystOne’ blood analyser and a scanning IR spectrophotometer – specifically bought for this programme as part of a significant investment in laboratory resources. They will also have the opportunity to obtain Home Office modules PIL A and B, accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, in the second year, and to undertake a project management course in the final year, making them much more employable.

Nieky van Veggel, Course Scheme Manager, said: “The four year integrated Masters (MSci) programme provides students with a fantastic opportunity to obtain the subject and practical expertise required for a variety of careers in animal health science. The programme builds on the College’s experience of successfully delivering the more traditional three year degree programmes in Bioveterinary and Animal Science, which are integrated within the new MSci, providing students with a greater opportunity to gain relevant practical and clinical experience.

“The programme is a unique blend of the biological sciences relating to animals, the way they work, their health, their diseases and their relationships with humans. Students will be taught by a range of skilled scientists and clinicians with extensive experience of animal disease and research.”

Writtle College Principal, Dr Stephen Waite, said: “We are very excited to be leading the way once again with this innovative programme. It builds on the success of our Integrated Masters in Veterinary Physiotherapy, as well as our popular Animal Science and Animal Management programmes.

"Last year we were granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers, which means that from September 2017, students will be able to study for a degree awarded by Writtle, rather than from the University of Essex. It is an exciting prospect that the MSci in Bioveterinary Science will be the first new Higher Education programme to be validated by us.”
