A Writtle College postgraduate has been announced as a finalist in the International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) competition - the world's premier competition and exhibition specialising in garden, plant, flower and botanical photography.

Photographer and mixed media artist, Marion Sidebottom, entered two stunning images of city trees that she took in Brisbane last summer in the ‘Greening the City’ category, which showcases the relationship between cities and nature around the world.

She attended the launch of the IGPOTY exhibition at Kew Gardens on Friday 5 February, where the competition results were announced. She was a finalist with two images and one of these was awarded ‘Highly Commended’. There were over 20,000 entries from over 50 countries so this was a remarkable achievement.

Marion graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Rural Resource Development (specialising in environmental issues) from Writtle College in 1995 and, after a change in direction, returned in 2013 to study a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, before completing an MA in Art and Design last year. She also studied for her NCFE Levels 1 and 2 in Photography at Writtle.

Last year, Marion also won a national UK photography competition run by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Marion, who lives in Chelmsford, said: “I was so thrilled to be placed in this prestigious competition and have been amazed at the response I have had on my award. My time at Writtle College studying the Environment, Arts and Photography has helped inspire my lifelong fascination with the natural world. I hope that my work enables me to share with other people the sense of wonder that I experience when I see these beautiful things and that we should also consider our relationship and impact on the natural world”.
