Four teams visited Writtle College’s equine centre to compete in a British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) dressage and jumping competition.

Teams of four from Writtle College, University of Essex, University of Cambridge and University of East Anglia went head-to-head yesterday <12 February>.

Emma Walker, captain of the Writtle College team for the day, explained how the competition worked: “We had four horses for dressage and four horses for jumping. One at a time, each team member drew a letter out of a hat to decide if they were on horse A,B,C or D. Each horse then completed a dressage test four times in total; one with Writtle, one with Essex, one with Cambridge and one with UEA.

“The aim is to try to get a better dressage score on your horse than the other three riders. The same applies for jumping too.”

The Writtle College A Team – comprising Beth Barrett, Bex Slade, Hannah Dury and Emma Walker – came second to Cambridge University. Bex came fifth individually and Emma was the individual winner.
