Writtle University College is enhancing the out of hours support available to over 300 residential students, by recruiting 2 Residential Student Support Officers (RSSO). Would you like to join our dedicated Residential Student Support Team, to make a positive contribution to our student community, supporting wellbeing, inclusion and their overall student experience?
As an RSSO, you will work in partnership with various teams across WUC and be responsible for responding to a range of out of hour’s student issues, including those relating to student wellbeing, accommodation and community living (including noise complaints and community living disagreements) and emergencies as they arise (e.g. first aid, fire alarms, critical incidents). You will be there to listen, support, identify concerns/risks, take decisive action and signpost to various teams and/or agencies (as appropriate), monitor students and their behaviour and update records as needed. Part of the role also requires regular patrols of the halls of residence allowing you to build and develop effective relationships with the resident student body.
Alongside supporting our students, you will help to organise and promote an inclusive programme of social events/activities and strive to improve student support services and the overall student experience. Under the direction of the Senior warden, you will regularly update the team’s social media accounts; creating engaging content, newsletters and other material that caters to a wide audience and encourages participation in campaigns and events run by the team and wider WUC community.
Our Residential Student Support Officers work outside of normal WUC operating hours, including covering the Christmas, New Year, and Easter holiday periods on a rota basis, over the course of the academic year (September – June with training and pre-term preparation in core hours during August). Upon appointment, you will be required to attend training in core office hours prior to commencing work on the Out of Hours Rota.
The role can sometimes be challenging due to the nature of the support that the team provides, yet it can also be extremely rewarding – being emotionally resilient, able to show initiative and working well under pressure, will be beneficial to our successful applicants. Relevant experience of mentoring or counselling would also be helpful in this role, although not essential.
To succeed in your application, it is vital that you have practical knowledge of working with young people and/or vulnerable adults, as well as dealing with confidential/sensitive issues including Safeguarding.
Benefits of working for Writtle University College include working on our beautiful main campus two miles from the city of Chelmsford, membership to the Local Government Pension Scheme, access to our 24/7 staff employee assistance programme and reduced-price gym membership.
