Higher Education tuition fee and maintenance loans
Home UK undergraduate students will not have to pay tuition fees up-front for any year of study. The Government provide Home UK students with tuition fee loans which are paid directly to Writtle University College. Students commencing studies from September 2023 only begin to repay any loans after completion of studies, or from the the tax year 2026-27, whichever comes earliest, and once they are earning more than the repayment threshold of £25,000.

Undergraduate Funding - Full-Time and Part-Time Students
While you are a student, you will have two main costs - tuition fees and living expenses. You can apply for government loans to help with both. To qualify you must meet certain residency criteria.
If you qualify for student loans, you will not have to pay tuition fees up-front for any year of study.
There are two types of funding available:- A non-means tested tuition fee loan of up to £9,250 (full-time) or £6,935 (part-time). This is paid direct to the University College.
- A maintenance loan. This helps towards your living costs whilst studying. The amount of loan will be dependant on your household income, and will be paid directly into your bank account at the start of each term.

New Students
You will need to complete an online application at www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance
Once your loan has been approved, you will be sent a loan declaration (within approximately 6 weeks).
Returning Students
You must reapply for your loan before each year of study. You can apply online by logging into your Student Finance account at the link below:

Interest is charged on the loans from the day Student Finance England makes the first payment to either yourself or the University College, until your loan is repaid in full or cancelled. The loan does not have to be paid back until you have finished or left your course, and until your income is over the repayment threshold. Maintenance Loan

The Government-funded maintenance loan helps students with living costs such as food, accommodation and travel. EU students are not eligible to apply for maintenance loans.

Postgraduate Loans

A Postgraduate Loan can help with course fees and living costs while you study a postgraduate master’s course. You have to repay your Postgraduate Loan at the same time as any other student loans you have. You’ll be charged interest from the day you get the first payment. You can also get extra support if you have a disability.
For students commencing studies from September 2023, a loan of up to £12,167 is available. The total amount requested will be paid to you evenly over the length of your course.

MOD ELCAS funding for Armed Forces members

Writtle University College is proud to be an approved provider for the Ministry of Defence Enhanced Learning Credit Scheme (ELCAS). This is an initiative to promote lifelong learning amongst current or former members of the Armed Forces by providing financial support towards higher level learning via an application process.

US Federal Loans

US Federal Loans at Writtle University College
With regret, since March 2020, Writtle University College has not been eligible to issue federal loans or been able to certify private loans such as Sallie Mae for any student.

19+ Advanced Learner Loans

Students can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the costs of a course at College, if planning to study a Level 3 course or above. To qualify you must meet certain residency criteria and be over the age of 19 on the first day of your course. Please note the Level 3 qualification must be listed on the Advanced Learner Loans catalogue
The loans are non means tested so do not depend on your household income, and no credit checks are made. The minimum loan is £300 and payments are made direct to the College. You do not have to borrow the full cost of your course, as some of it can be paid for by yourself if required. Further details can be found by visiting:- gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan

Further Education Tuition fee loans
If you're aged 19 or over, live in England and are thinking about further education or training, you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It's easy to apply for and you won't have to pay anything back until you're earning over £27,295 a year.
