How to apply Come to an Open Day

Introduction

Develop essential horticulture skills and learn how to identify and care for a range of plants. Our course is accredited by the Royal Horticultural Society.

You’ll learn how to care for and prune plants; identify a range of common plants, weeds, pests and diseases; and understand the reasons behind soil testing. Underpinning the whole course is an appreciation of health and safety.

This Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture can prepare you for a career in a growing industry.

Horticulture – the growing of flowers, study of plants, design of gardens and construction of landscapes – is fundamental to our health and quality of life. It’s an extraordinary world with lots of employment opportunities, from historical gardens to commercial crop production.

Hands-on learning

As a horticulture student at Writtle College you'll:

  • get hands-on experience of planting, growing and caring for plants
  • have access to our glasshouse, gardens and large collection of plants
  • study on a rural 150-hectare campus.

Royal Horticultural Society

We're an Approved Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Centre, offering RHS qualifications which are widely recognised and respected in the horticulture industry.

Careers and educational progression

This Level 2 qualification can help you start a career in horticulture. You could find yourself working in historical and botanical gardens, landscape management, country parks, recreation and golf courses. There are also opportunities in commercial horticulture, such as growing food crops, ornamental crops, hardy nursery stock production, floriculture and retailing.

It’s also a foundation for further training, including the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development at Writtle College.
