Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport and Fitness with Girls Football Academy
About the Course
This one-year, full-time qualification has been developed in consultation with employers and professional bodies so that it is appropriate and consistent with current industry practice and allows learners to enter direct employment to the health and fitness sector. Higher-education institutions have also been consulted to ensure that qualification allows appropriate progression for those aspiring to go on to higher-level study.
About the Academy
New for September 2020, the female football academy which is in partnership with Leyton Orient Football Club gives girls the opportunity to get professional coaching from Leyton Orient Football Club and compete in games against other schools and colleges.
Students will partake in 8 hours of coaching and games per week and will train in the mornings and have lessons in the afternoon.
All abilities are welcome, but previous playing experience is an advantage.
This qualification consists of the following mandatory and selected optional specialist units.
The proportion of mandatory content ensures that all learners are following a coherent programme of study and acquiring the knowledge, understanding and skills that will be recognised and valued.

- Self-employment in Sport and Physical Activity
The mandatory content gives students a broad introduction to working in the sport and fitness industry. This includes preparation for working in a self-employed capacity. Learners gain knowledge of the legal requirements for self-employment as well as learning how to build their business.
The content also forms a basis for progression to further study. Part of the mandatory content allows learners to develop technical skills in working with clients in a gym environment, carrying out gym inductions and leading small-group-based exercise. All these elements are required to work as a gym instructor in the health and fitness industry.

- Fitness Training
- Organising Events in Sport and Physical Activities
- Business and Technology in Personal Training
The following information provides students with the entry requirements for this particular course.
- 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (A*-C)
- Must include English, Maths and Science
- Satisfactory references from most recent School / College / Employer
Alternative qualifications or experience will be considered on application.
Method of Assessment
Units are assessed using a wide variety of methods including through forms of written, practical assessment and presentation assesment.
This qualification provides the knowledge, and develops the skills and application required, for professional accreditation with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and the Chartered Institute of Management for Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) Gym Instructor standards. The Gym Instructor Standards are a prerequisite for all professional roles in the sector.
On successful completion of the qualification, learners will be qualified to apply for membership of CIMPSA and REPs. Members of REPs are protected with specialist insurance that includes public liability and personal accident cover, which supports self-employment activities. Learners are able to continue to develop their careers through industry-endorsed Continuing Professional Development programmes.
