About the Course

This advanced level course is completed in one year and is aimed at students over the age of 19 who are interested in a change of career or progression to higher education. It combines both theoretical and practical aspects of animal care. You will develop animal handling skills and gain an understanding of how to maintain the health and welfare of a wide range of animal species.

Areas of Study

Understand and promote animal health, understand the principles of animal biology, undertake animal handling and safe working, undertake and review work experience in the land-based industries, understand and interpret animal behaviour and communication, understand and undertake wildlife management and rehabilitation.

Entry Requirements

The following information provides students with the entry requirements for this particular course.
  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 or Grade A* to C
  • Must include English, Maths and Science
  • 5 Days of work placement in an animal related establishment and a satisfactory reference from them
  • Satisfactory references from most recent School / College / Employer

Alternative qualifications or experience will be considered on application.

Work Placements

One day a week is spent at a work placement. This is assessed as part of the Industrial Experience unit.

Method of Assessment

The course is assessed in a variety of ways including written assignments, tests, presentations as well as practical assessments involving the animals at the College Animal Unit. (It should be noted that the majority of assessments are written).

After Completion of Your Course...

Progress to a higher level qualification such as a Foundation degree or undertake an Advanced level Apprenticeship. Employment in a supervisory capacity in kennels, zoos and wildlife parks is possible. The wide range of subjects covered has also allowed previous students to go onto Veterinary Nursing, Zoo or Welfare Employment.
