Introduction

Learn to work safely with animals while exploring areas such as genetics, biochemistry and microbiology with our Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Science) at Writtle College.

This advanced-level course lets you combine your interests in animals and science.

You’ll learn how to manage feeding and nutrition, and be responsible for planning and carrying out animal husbandry health and handling. You’ll also explore animal behaviour, animal breeds and welfare and business skills.

There’s a focus on animal science throughout, with course content including cell biology and genetics, biochemistry and microbiology, and science investigation and report writing.

You’ll gain valuable experience with a work placement too, while completing a portfolio of work that contributes toward your final grade.

Hands-on learning

Join an Animal Management course at Writtle College and:

  • study on our 150-hectare campus with its specialist animal centres and working farm
  • take part in animal handling practicals involving work with a wide range of domesticated and captive species

On completion of this diploma, you could seek employment in roles such as:

  • Veterinary practice lab technician
  • Veterinary practice lab assistant
  • Veterinary practice clinical assistant
  • Animal care assistant – managing the day-to-day care of companion animal patients under the supervision of a veterinary nursing team
  • Equine technician – assisting an equine vet team with the investigation and treatment of horses
  • Lay assistant – carrying out designated tasks on farms in support of a farm animal vet team
  • Animal husbandry technician
  • Research assistant (desk-based)

Or you might choose to continue your studies, by progressing to a university degree course. Options at ARU Writtle – which shares a campus with Writtle College – include BSc (Hons) Animal Management and BSc (Hons) Animal Science.

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Science) also offers a direct entry route to the Royal Veterinary College (RSV) Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed), dependant on achieving a D*D*D* overall with Distinctions in:

  • Biological Systems of Animals
  • Synoptic Assessment (1)
  • Synoptic Assessment (2)
  • Theory Exam (2)
  • Undertake Investigative Project in the Land-Based Industries
