Introduction

Develop your animal-handling skills and learn how to maintain the health and welfare of a range of animal species, with our Advanced Technical Diploma at Writtle College.

This advanced-level course combines theoretical and practical aspects of animal care.

It will give you the skills and knowledge you need to start a career in animal management, or progress to further learning.

As a student at Writtle College you’ll use our animal studies centre, with its aquatic, reptile and companion animal rooms. It’s part of our rural campus, which, as well as housing small animals, is home to horses and farm livestock.

You’ll spend one day a week at a work placement, gaining valuable real-life experience.

Hands-on learning

Join an Animal Management course at Writtle College and:

  • study on our 150-hectare campus with its specialist animal centres and working farm
  • take part in animal handling practicals involving work with a wide range of domesticated and captive species
  • help to support animals’ basic living and nutrition needs
  • go on study trips and gain experience through a short work placement.

Having completed our Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma, you’ll be ready to work in the animal care and management industries. Potential jobs include:

  • Animal care assistant
  • Kennel or cattery worker/supervisor
  • Animal hospital care assistant
  • Animal care worker
  • Pet store assistant
  • Apprentice in an animal care business

Or you might choose to continue your studies, by progressing to Year 2 of our Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management (1080). This, in turn, can lead to degree-level study.
