About the Course

This course is ideal for those who are new to the industry and would like to gain a recognised qualification related to their work. This course can be studied either as an Apprenticeship or as a 'stand alone' student and has multiple routes available so you can study units relevant to your work role.

Areas of Study

Animal health, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, animal handling, animal husbandry, breeding, first aid and customer care.

Entry Requirements

The following information provides students with the entry requirements for this particular course.
  • 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-3 or Grade A*-D
  • Must include English and Maths at no less than Grade 3 or Grade D and Science at Grade D
  • Either English or Maths must be at a minimum of Grade 4 or Grade C
  • 5 Days of work placement in an animal related establishment and a satisfactory reference from them
  • Satisfactory references from most recent School / College / Employer

Alternative qualifications or experience will be considered on application.

Method of Assessment

Students are required to compile a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence in a range of tasks.

After Completion of Your Course...

Progress to a higher level qualification such as the Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Animal Care, or the Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management.

You will need...

Students must be self-motivated and enthusiastic about animal care and attend college one day per week.

Some form of work experience/employment is also required:
  • Stand alone students require work within the industry for a minimum of 16 hours per week. This can be either paid or voluntary.
  • Apprentices need to be employed in the industry working a contracted minimum of 30 hours a week.
