Non-Medical Helpers Providers

Writtle University College provides the following NMH

Band 3 Specialist Enabling Support

• Communication Support Worker working with British Sign Language user (CSW-BSL)
• Specialist Notetaker for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students - Includes Electronic Note Taking

Band 4 Specialist Access and Learning Facilitators

• Specialist one-to-one Study Skills & Strategy Support (AS and/or SpLD)
• Specialist one-to-one Mentoring (Mental Health and/or AS)
• Specialist one-to-one Mentoring (ASD)

Reasonable Adjustments provided

Disabled students need to contact the HE Disability Team to discuss reasonable adjustments. Evidence is required for the agreement of reasonable adjustments. An Inclusive Learning Plan (ILP) will be created with each disabled student. This document will outline the appropriate support and reasonable adjustments. Each student has the opportunity to agree on the ILP and give consent for communication to relevant staff.

Some of the below adjustments available through the ILP process include:

Lectures and Seminars

There is currently no lecture capture facility at Writtle University College.

• Students can audio record lectures and seminars for their own use and learning.
• Lecture notes/slides are made available on Moodle at least 24 hours in advance of the lecture. (NB If sessions rely on external staff this anticipatory adjustment may not be possible; departments should endeavour to provide copies of slides as soon after the lecture as possible)
• Disabled students may need to leave lectures, labs or other classes for a short break e.g. to administer insulin, eat/drink, manage anxiety symptoms or to take a brief rest.
• If required, lecturers will wear a radio microphone to enable d/Deaf students to use a hearing loop.

Coursework, presentations and in-class assessments

• Appropriate reasonable adjustments are implemented by the department for class tests and assessments in line with centrally organised examinations.
• Disabled students may request to discuss adjustments for presentations e.g. additional time provided due to speech difficulties.
• Disabled students may access notes when presenting, consistent with the requirements of the presentation.

Examinations and timed assessments

• Appropriate reasonable adjustments to exams are implemented in accordance with the Code of Practice on Assessment. Examples of standard exam arrangements may include extra time, supervised rest breaks, small room, use of a PC.

Reading and Writing

• Disabled students with print disabilities (e.g. Blind and partially sighted, Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism) will be provided access to the RNIB Bookshare scheme. More information about this scheme can be found on https://www.rnibbookshare.org/cms/

Managing Time and Organising Work

• Disabled students may arrange to meet with their course tutor (according to tutor’s availability) to discuss structure, routine and agree on a concrete starting point to assist with prioritisation of work.

Travel and access to Writtle Campus

• Timetabling will, as far as possible, consider the requirements of individual disabled students to enable them to access classes e.g. ground floor room bookings.

WUC Campus estate and Accommodation

• Disabled students can request reasonable adjustments to be made in halls of residence and/or for specific aspects of the campus estate. Each request will be considered according to the University Policy.
