About the Course

Level 3 Certificate of Competence in Felling and Processing Medium Trees Over 380mm and up to 760mm is for individuals who operate a chainsaw as part of their work in arboriculture, forestry or other industries. It will provide the knowledge, understanding and skills required to fell medium trees up to 760mm safely, to industry standards and in line with current legislation.

Topics covered include hazards, risks, controls, emergency procedures, legislation, industry good practice, felling and processing medium size tress over 380mm up to 760mm.

To achieve this qualification candidates must successfully achieve a one to one practical assessment with oral questioning by an NPTC City & Guilds approved assessor.

Entry Requirements

The module requires reading and interpreting of information such as safety instructions and technical knowledge and prepares participants for NPTC independent assessment. This intensive practical course requires a good level of physical fitness and an ability to study written technical information.

Candidates must be competent in Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-cutting, Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm.

We are governed by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations therefore participants will not be allowed to start the course without the correct Personal Protective Equipment which should conform to CE/EN standards.


  • Chainsaw with maximum guide bar 15 inch (insurance requirement, above this length is not acceptable)
  • Fuel & oil in approved container(s)
  • Filing kit, for sharpening
  • Saw tool kit
  • Felling lever; if possible
  • 3 x high lift wedges
  • Sledge hammer

  • Winch 1.6 ton SWL or greater with appropriate strops (can be provided)

  • Hard hat assembly - with ear defenders, mesh visor (or safety glasses conforming to EN166)

  • Personal first aid kit/ large wound dressing
  • Whistle
  • Wet weather clothing
All equipment and PPE must conform to relevant CE approvals and be in a serviceable condition.
