Domestic Chainsaw Use and Log Splitting

About the Course

During this four hour course candidates will gain an understanding of the correct procedures and safe working practices for using a chainsaw and manual log splitting at home.

Topics covered include personal protective equipment (PPE), safe use in the working environment, hazard identification, correct work positioning, using correct fuel, oil mixtures and chain lubrication, maintenance of the saw, sharpening of the chain, starting and stopping procedures, storing your machine when not in use, log splitting with hand tools.

This course is aimed at people with log burners and/or large gardens who may need to use a chainsaw occasionally. Anyone intending to use a chainsaw professionally should look at our NPTC courses.

Entry Requirements

We are governed by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations therefore candidates will not be allowed to start the course without the correct PPE personal protective equipment. We strongly recommend candidates also wear a high visibility vest.

Candidates are welcome to bring their own saw if they require specific advice but use of them on site will not be permitted.

Useful Information

Free parking is available on campus; a permit will be issued and should be clearly displayed.

Tea and coffee making facilities are available, please bring any other refreshments.
