BHS Stage 1 Care and Silver Challenge Award

About the Course

Our training programme will provide you with the basic principles of horse care and how to safely and efficiently undertake daily tasks. This will include routine grooming, mucking out, bedding down, cleaning and adjusting tack and providing food and water. Also included are some ongoing assessments for BHS Challenge Awards.

The course offers foundation knowledge and skills in preparation for the British Horse Society (BHS) Stage One examination, not included in the cost.

Holders of the BHS Stage One certificate are able to proceed on to BHS Stage Two. A full and detailed syllabus may be obtained from the British Horse Society website.

Entry Requirements

Minimum age 14 (Parental consent required).

In line with BHS training centre standards and due to the nature of the horses at the University College, we ask that students weigh no more than 13 stone (82.5kg) which includes your PPE.

Please come appropriately dressed for an equine yard.

By making a booking you are declaring yourself medically fit to participate in the course.

Useful Information

British Horse Society (BHS) examinations must be booked, no later than two weeks prior to the exam date.

Free parking is available on campus; a permit will be issued and should be clearly displayed.

Please bring your own refreshments.
