BHS Ride Safe

About the Course

Ride Safe gives you the confidence to ride in the environments you are most often faced with, keeping you and your horse safe. Ride Safe is a co-requisite of the BHS Stage 1 Ride award.

The course offers foundation knowledge and skills in preparation for the British Horse Society (BHS) Ride Safe examination, not included in the cost. Topics covered will include:

  • Identifying the rules in the Highway Code specific to horse riders
  • Knowing how to ride out safely
  • Being able to ride a horse in an enclosed area and out on the road
Upon booking a BHS Ride Safe exam, participants will be sent the Ride Safe Guide.

Entry Requirements

Minimum age 14 (Parental consent required).

Participants must be able to Walk, Trot and Canter.

Please come appropriately dressed for an Equine yard.

Participants are required to attend all riding sessions dressed in appropriate outdoor riding wear, an approved riding hat and gloves.

In order to attend the course participants will require a copy of Ride Safe: A Modern Approach to Riding Safely in All Environments, which can be purchased from the BHS.

Note taking equipment would be advisable.

By making a booking you are declaring yourself medically fit to participate in the course.

Useful Information

Free parking is available on campus; a permit will be issued and should be clearly displayed.

British Horse Society (BHS) examinations must be booked, no later than two weeks prior to the exam date.
