Sports Turf Level 2 & 3 (Groundsman)Occupation
I am currently Assistant Groundsman at Arsenal Football Club at the Emirates Stadium. I am also on the Young Board of Directors at the Institute of Groundsman and a Match Day Groundsman at Wembley Stadium.
How has the completion of your course supported you in your career?
The completion of my apprenticeship and my Level 2 and 3 qualifications has allowed me to progress further in my career, allowing me to secure my current job. It will also open up further opportunities in the future regarding new jobs in higher positions.
Why did you choose to study at Writtle University College?
I chose to study at Writtle University College for a number of reasons; firstly because they offered the course that I wanted to take and secondly because both the facilities for practical learning and the classroom side are second to none. However, the most important factor was because of the tutor, Nigel Beckford. His passion for the subject and all-round knowledge is incredible. Also the list of students in the industry at high profile places that he has taught over the years is unbelievable.
What does Writtle University College mean to you?
My time at Writtle University College was very enjoyable. We had a great group of students that were all willing to help each other and we had an excellent tutor who was willing to help you in any way possible. I have not only made friends in the industry, whilst at College, but I have made friends for life.
What did you particularly enjoy about your apprenticeship?
My time at Writtle University College was the best time of my educational life. I much preferred college to school as you are treated more like an adult, which I think enabled me to get more out of it. The other members of staff were also very helpful - whether it was the librarians, student services or the office staff. There was also a wide range of other additional courses available such as First Aid, Spraying courses and other equipment qualifications.
Future plans and aspirations:
I would like to continue to further my career in the industry and work my way towards becoming a Head Groundsman of my own site or stadium, whether it be in the UK, Europe or the rest of the world.

NVQ 2 Horse CareWhat benefits do you think undertaking an apprenticeship offers you?
Undertaking an apprenticeship means to me that I will be learning about what I enjoy. I will also gain more confidence around horses as well as learning more about what exactly I want to do with my career. I think that upon completion of the apprenticeship I will have a better chance of finding a good employer.
In the future I hope to run my own riding school and to teach horse riding to disabled people.
