Today it was reported by GuildHE that Writtle College has this year enjoyed a boost in student applications of 25.4 per cent.

Higher Education is central to the Writtle College strategic vision and the GuildHE announcement today further cements the College dedication to offering an excellent standard of Higher Education.

With a number of new specialist Higher Education courses recently introduced within the four Schools of Design, Equine and Animal Science, Horticulture and Sustainable Environments, the future looks bright for Writtle College.

Professor David Butcher, Principal of Writtle College, said:

“Writtle is currently in a healthy position and I am delighted to see the significant increase in applications to Writtle College. This is clear and positive evidence of the quality and attractiveness of our specialist academic portfolio taught here at Writtle College.”

An analysis of figures shows that applications to study at institutions represented by GuildHE, whose members range from very new universities to small specialist colleges, have grown on average by 14 per cent this year. This compares with an average of 7.5 per cent across the sector.

The current boom in applications to GuildHE institutions is several times greater than the national average, data published today by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service reveals. Some institutions have seen spectacular growth compared with many of the UK's biggest and most prestigious universities.

Alice Hynes, chief executive of GuildHE, said:

“As prospective students are thinking more carefully about their choices in these difficult times, they are turning to places where they can be sure of a supported and professional service and a strong academic community. Places that are clear about their character and the student experience they offer will be increasingly attractive. The GuildHE members can often reinforce that position, having tried and tested quality assurance systems. Through student networks - if it is good, word is getting out.”

Other small institutions and specialist colleges enjoying a popularity boost include Leeds College of Art and Design (a 25 per cent rise), Plymouth College of Art and Design (up 18.8 per cent), Leeds Trinity and All Saints (17.3 per cent), and the University for the Creative Arts (16 per cent).

GuildHE members are among the most dynamic and fastest-growing in higher education.

GuildHE is an inclusive body, with members across universities, university colleges and specialist institutions. The members include many institutions with a specialist mission or subject focus and major providers in art and design, music and the performing arts, agriculture, education and health.
