Writtle College hosted the presentation of the Essex Gardens Trust (EGT) Photography Competition Awards Thursday 29th November at 6pm. The Principal of the College, Dave Butcher, presented the awards to the successful winners. The work of the winners and all the entrants are currently displayed in the lower corridor of the College in the Main Building.

There were two categories in the competition; the winner in the adult category was Bella D'Arcy. In the children's category 11 year old Hughie Elgar, from St Helens Catholic Junior School Brentwood, took first place, while second place was awarded to the Gardening Club at Kingston Primary School, Benfleet.

Writtle College will be hosting part of the EGT lecture series, with the next lecture to be held on the 19th January, the topic will be 'Art and the Garden, Setting and Symbolism Dr Twigs Way'. The theme for the lecture series is 'Artists in the Garden', students and staff of the College have been invited to attend these lectures at no cost, any non members of the EGT are asked to pay £5 per ticket.

The EGT aims to research and record the designed landscapes, parks and gardens in the county, both private and public. These will then be protected by the EGT who are aiming to improve official awareness and general appreciation of the gardens and their history. Through a help and advice network the trust can offer an informed consultative approach when a designed landscape comes under threat from inappropriate development.

The EGT also publishes a newsletter and organises garden visits, lectures and seminars for schools as well as for those who hold membership. They organise educational projects for both the general public and for schools.
